Billy Martin is a remarkable drummer who has successfully carved out his own musical path. As the organic beat-maker of Medeski, Martin & Wood, Martin Blends up a mix of world-music cultures, hip-hop and jazz to create his own style. Billy new book traces the roots of African Rhythmic systems in the Americas. Learning these African-based claves is similar to jazz musicians learning chord changes, voicings, and scale patterns which enable them to improvise. Claves are ancient and modern scales for drummers. Martin’s notation can be easily read with or without previous musical training.

Billy’s choice of sticks is Regal Tip’s “BG” model.
